Walking The Hill: The Art of Accidental Transformation

“…a masterpiece of men’s work…”

--Michael Gurian, NYT Best Selling Author

At one time or another you must have asked yourself what it means to be a good man. And if you were lucky, you found a brother who was as determined in the search for an answer as you are. If you are in need of support on your journey, this book is for you.

Gary Plep works with men. His goal is to help men learn how to support each other in healing themselves form all kinds of wounds, challenges, and traumas. His method springs from his love of the mountains of California, from experiences that have helped him see where a man needs to go to become the person he wants to be. I was fortunate to share his path for seven years. This book invites you to join us as we climb the same mountain nearly 800 times, and how the mountain transformed us.

Everyone’s life is different, and yet there are common themes in the way we pursue transformation, and these come out of the way we live our lives. You may see yourself as very ordinary or very special or somewhere in between, and no matter how successful you may be, or how many times you have missed attaining success, there are moments in your life that have shaped you, and you may want to learn more about them. Sometimes, it’s good to read about how a couple of friends took on a demanding physical challenge that led to understanding what shaped their lives and in the process gained an expansion of consciousness that brought a deep sense of fulfillment.

If you are a spiritual seeker, we wrote this book about our personal quest for you. We crafted our chapters to reflect what the mountain taught both of us about love, life, and God, and what it means to follow a spiritual path, and gives you a glimpse of adventure as a spiritual practice. For us, our journey helped resolve forty years of living with PTSD: the gift of our healing was embedded in the dusty path of our mountain trail.

We decided it was important to take you with us. Our adventure is accompanied by more than 50 color photographs, that allow us to share the dramatic visual beauty of our path to an accidental spiritual awakening and transformation. These provide the unique opportunity of walking with us and seeing the environment that pulled us forward into our experience.

You can find our book in both print and electronic formats. Go to our website, walkingthehill.com to find the version of our book that’s best for you. If you are a professor or student in an undergraduate or graduate program in spirituality, psychology, social work, and men’s studies, this book can be recommended reading.
